In other pages of this website
we have given information about the bus routes of Macbrayne across the
Scottish Highlands. The steamers and buses connected through the
ferry ports to weave a network of transport opportunities, that whilst
modest by 21st century standards and expectatioms, were nonetheless
vital travel arteries in the 1950s..Remember that the first car ferries
did not reach the islands until 1964, and then much changed forever.
On this page we show the timings
of the steamers, offering both first and third class berths and
accommodations and linking the islands of the Hebrides to the mainland
railheads at Mallaig, Oban and Kyle. Relive with us now the
memories of the Outer Islands and Inner Islands mail steamers as they
voyaged westerly from Oban and Kyle to serve their respective islands,
the two meeting at
the port of Lochboisdale in South Uist each Monday, Wednesday and
Friday evening. Pity then the traveller destined for the isle of
Benbecula with a late night bus ride of thirty miles over uncertain
roads still to be accomplished !
