SALISBURY AND DISTRICT
COACH & BUS OPERATORS TIMETABLE JUNE 1949

Please note - this is a site of historical record and does not contain current service information

In June 1949 a comprehensive timetable of the independently operated bus services in the Salisbury area was published.  As far as is known only the one edition was ever issued, although it would be reasonable to assume that it was intended to be a regular publication as the advertisements for the Hippodrome Theatre in Bournemouth gives a dated list of shows and performances for the next few months.

With the exception of Silver Star Motor Services the individual timetable pages in the original publication do not identify the operator of the routes, although there is a list of the firms concerned on the inside rear cover.  The entire timetable is reproduced here, including advertisements.

The inside front cover has an index of the routes.  This includes reference at the end of the listing to inset pages for two routes (Skylark's services to Lyndhurst and to Romsey), suggesting that the covers were printed and could still be amended after the content pages had been laid out and printed.

The original booklet measures 8.75 inches by 5.5 inches and has twenty pages plus covers, and the publisher was Rodanair Publications of York Street, Northam, Southampton.

This a book of memories.  The purchase of the business of Bells of Winterslow by Wilts & Dorset in 1999, following the owners retirement, marked the passing of the last of the traditional independent operators who had been running into the cathedral city of Salisbury continuously since the passing of the Road Traffic Act in 1930.  For further information you might wish to consult the book  "Motor Bus Services from Salisbury before 1939" written by my friend and colleague  Roger Grimley.
