DAY TRIP TO CHERBOURG

THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO FRANCE

Eighteen and a day trip to Cherbourg . . .

For me the start of a lifelong interest in France, the French language, French transport and the French way of life came in July 1962 when I went with friends on a day trip on the steamer 'St Patrick' from Weymouth in Dorset to Cherbourg in Normandie. 42/6d well spent!

I recall that it was raining when we landed in France and also that we only just made it back to the boat for the return trip, having to run along the quayside. But it was an experience to be savoured and enjoyed and it was only a few months before I went back again - and that was the start of a series of trips to all parts of the country that have now spanned almost sixty years. Although Normandie and Cherbourg have always remained the favourite places.

Recently I rediscovered the leaflet about that first excursion sailing and it is illustrated below. Who now remembers the steamers of British Railways?



		Pour moi le début d'un intérêt permanent en France, la langue française, les transports français et le mode de vie français est venu en Juillet 1962, lorsque je suis allé avec des amis sur une excursion d'une journée sur le paquebot 'St Patrick' de Weymouth, Dorset à Cherbourg en Normandie. Je me souviens qu'il pleuvait quand nous avons arrivé en France. Nous ne viens de le faire revenir au bateau pour le voyage de retour, et il faut courir le long du quai. Mais c'était une expérience à savourer et apprécier et ce n'est que quelques mois avant que j'ai retourné encore une fois - et ce fut le début d'une série de voyages dans toutes les parties du pays au fil de soixante ans. Toujours Normandie et Cherbourg sont restés mes lieux préférés. Récemment, j'ai redécouvert la brochure rouge pour ma première excursion et elle est illustré ci-dessus. Qui se souvient aujourd'hui les pacquebots des chemins de fer britanniques?
