NEIL BEATON TIMETABLES

Two complete timetables from this bygone bus operator on the Isle of Skye

The timetable booklet was current in the early 1950s until the run down and transfer of the Beaton bus routes to other operators on the island.  The last route run by Beaton's was to Armadale on 31st August 1953, ending twenty eight years of public bus services by the firm as operation passed to David Macbrayne. The handwritten annotations are believed to refer to the transfer and acquisition of the various routes by their subsequent operators. By scrolling down through this webpage illustrations of all twelve pages of the timetable booklet will be found, covering the times and fares for all of the Beaton routes. The bus illustrated on the front cover is CST92, an Austin K2 14-seater with Walker body, purchased new in 1947 along with sister bus CST301; just two of several such Austins acquired in post war years.

The earlier timetable card below is from the summer season of 1947.  There is little difference between the two timetables except for the days of  operation on the Portree - Struan - Dunvegan service and the introduction of the Glendale to Armadale service. It is unclear whether this was by connection at Sligachan with the Portree - Armadale service or whether the bus ran through.  Armadale was a significant destination for Skye
people with it s ferry connection to the railhead at Mallaig and thence trains to Fort William and Glasgow.
